Salary Negotiations

It is necessary to be prepared to negotiate a salary at a job interview. Job seekers need to spend time researching salaries in their industry in order to successfully negotiate the maximum salary for the job offered.

Researching Salaries

Salary.com has a "salary wizard" that permits users to enter a job category and match it to a zip code. The wizard then generates a salary report with wage, bonus, and benefits information. If relocation is an option, spend some time researching what your current or potential salary is worth in a new location. Move.com has a "salary calculator" tool where users can enter a salary, then obtain a report on how much they will need to earn in a new location. The cost-of-living varies widely from city to city so be mindful of that. Therefore, it's important to know the power of your paycheck.

It's important to note that the employer is paying you for your skills and qualifications and for the job you will perform. With that in mind you will need to be able to support your negotiations with information on what the job is worth at a market rate with consideration of your salary history. They aren't going to be willing to pay you more just because you are you.

Be Tolerant

Now that you are armed with the facts, make sure to be patient. When interviewing for a new position it is important not to bring up compensation until the employer brings it up first or makes a job offer. Let the employer make the first move! If you are asked what your salary requirements are, say that they are flexible, based upon the position and the total compensation package including benefits. Another option is to tell the employer you'd like to know more about the job responsibilities before discussing salary. Another alternative is to give the employer a salary range based upon salary research you've completed. In this case, make sure to cite the research you have done.

It’s good to keep in mind that there may not be much flexibility when it comes to salary. If the employer has a budget or an established salary configuration, the best you might get is the top of the range for that certain position. In that case, don't limit yourself to salary alone. If the employer can't afford to pay more, ask about the possibility of salary reviews, extra vacation, or even a bonus based on performance.

Be Discreet

Be discreet; never let an employer know you need money. That may cause you to appear to be somewhat desperate. However, always be honest about your past salary history and other job offers that are on the table. Lies have a bizarre way of coming back to irk the person who didn't tell the legitimacy.

Once you've received the offer, plan on taking some time to think about it. There is no need to accept or reject it right away if you don’t have to. A simple "I need to think it over" may get you an increase in the original offer. It is important to fully know what your bottom line is for each position you apply for. If the salary isn't enough for you to live on be prepared to pass on the opportunity.

Stay Optimistic

Regardless of whatever stage of negotiations you may be in remember to remain positive, optimistic, and continue to reiterate your interest in the position. Let the employer know that the only issue is the salary and you are really ecstatic about the job and the company. Then, if the position does sound like the perfect job, consider whether the company culture, including the benefits and flexibility, as well as the job itself is worth it, regardless of the salary. If they are, it might just be worth accepting the opportunity and taking a chance hoping that the salary increases will follow.

Job fairs are becoming a more universal method of entry level recruiting and initial screening. For the corporate recruiter, they offer an opportunity to the highest possible number of prospects in the shortest feasible amount of time. For many students, job fairs provide a freebie opportunity to meet with a manifold of employers in the same day. Are you a job fair goer? If you are, consider some of the following ideas and strategies as you represent you and your brand at that next job fair event:

1. Make sure you always smile.

2. Walk confidently with good posture.

3. Shake hands firmly and confidently.

4. Maintain great eye contact.

5. Take a writing instrument with you.

6. Take a notepad for jotting down notes.

7. Take extra copies of your resume, references, business cards, etc.

8. Ask questions and show interest.

9. Initiate conversation and introduce yourself in a professional manner.

10. Say “good morning, good afternoon, hello, or hi'

11. Be pleasant and polite.

12. Act like you are happy to be there.

13. Refrain from saying "I am looking for a job and will take about anything."

14. Show gratitude and appreciation.

15. Follow-up when you say you will.

16. Show energy and enthusiasm, regardless of how long you have been out of work.

17. Make yourself memorable in a good way.

18. Practice your “elevator pitch” prior to arrival.

19. Treat fellow job seekers with respect.

20. Dress in professional attire.

21. Discover one new idea or one new bit of wisdom from the employers.

22. Network with at least one new person.

23. Take a moment to meet and greet workshop leaders.

24. Offer to help somebody with something.

25. Speak with confidence.

26. Share a job search tip with co-attendees.

27. And always, say thank you.

Every job interview is different and should be approached with the attitude of I am going to show them what I am worth. In essence, we have to become salesmen and women, showing the potential employer how high-quality we are and what we can do for them. We all have credentials for jobs that are out there and available right now. Why not look at what your good at and start from there?

The first impression you make is the most imperative one. With that being said, take a look at your resume. An unwritten rule is to keep it straightforward without leaving out essential details. Keep it to one page and always include a cover letter. You may want to do a couple different styles of resume as well. If you do this, make sure you have the same information on both. By doing this you can decide which to send out for different positions.

Do not be fearful to pat yourself on the back. Your prospective employer has never met you and knows nothing about you, other than what is on a piece of paper in front of them. Let them know what you are great at and compliments or awards you have obtained for your work. Being confident is different than being arrogant, so be careful not to overdo it.

During an interview you will have the ability to further explain your qualities that would be a great asset for this corporation. Keep in mind; you do not need to tell them everything you have done that, in your mind, is great. You do not want to come across as egotistical. Before the interview, pick out a few different things that you are good at and draw attention to those as key factors. Be professional without sounding too uptight. If this does not come naturally, practice it.

When preparing for an interview, it never hurts to have examples of your work handy. You may not need them, but take them, just in case the interviewer asks to see some examples of your work

One aspect in a person every employer looks for is a great work ethic. Be prepared to look them in the eye and tell them about yours. This shows the employer that you are self-assured in your work, mean what you say and that you are worth it!

Looking for work is usually an overwhelming duty. With all the competition, quantity generally must be coupled with value to reach a goal. Getting reliable direction saves your time searching for what can work in having to look at what doesn’t. By receiving solid help probably will enhance your chances in separating yourself from the opposition.

The first impression you make on a prospective employer is the most imperative one. The first opinion an interviewer makes is going to be based on how you look and what you are wearing. That's why it's always important to dress professionally for a job interview, even if the work environment is casual. What's the appropriate dress code for an interview you ask? You'll want that first impression to be not just a good one, but, a great one. The candidate dressed in a suit and tie is going to make a much better impression than the candidate dressed in scruffy jeans and a t-shirt.

Men's Interview Attire

Suit (solid color – navy, dark grey, or black)

Long sleeve shirt (white or coordinated with the suit)

Belt

Tie

Dark socks, conservative leather shoes

Little or no jewelry

Neat, professional hairstyle

Limit the aftershave

Interview Attire Tips

Before you even think about going on an interview, make sure you have appropriate interview attire and everything fits correctly. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to get your clothes ready the night before, so you don't have to spend time getting them ready on the day of the interview. If your clothes are dry clean only, take them to the cleaners after an interview, so they are ready for next time. Make sure to polish your shoes and bring a breath mint and use it before you enter the building.

Before a job interview, make sure you have prepared and are set for it. Job interview preparation is necessary for every applicant. There are a few things you need to consider for that big day: personal grooming, character, promptness, and ethics. Most people are frightened with this kind of encounter, maybe because they are not prepared for it.

When you go to a job interview less prepared, this decreases the likelihood of you getting the job. You need to create a good impression and make a stupendous recall from the employer. So here are some points to remember as part of your job interview preparation.

First, research the company’s profile. When you want to be employed with a certain company, you have to know what they are doing in the industry. You need to research on their background, achievements, and milestones. Get necessary data on their organization such as products, services and other relevant issues. Identify their mission and vision and try to make a connection with your career objectives.

Oftentimes, the interviewer might ask you questions aligning your principles along with theirs. If you come across negative facts, just leave it. Do not bring it up during the interview. Also, you need to be familiar with the position you are applying for as well. Learn to identify the job description and other functions. It is also very important to know the location of the company. This will help you estimate the travel time from your house to your destination.

Second, try practice answering job interview questions and ask someone to evaluate your answers. It is good to let a different point of view appraise your ability in answering. Plus, it will also help you achieve confidence when talking to another person. Whether in school or with a staffing agency, you may undergo a mock interview. These are helpful to measure your quality by going over the feedback. You may also want to check online for some common job interview questions and how to answer them. Here are some questions to practice for:

1. Why have you chosen this company?
2. How will you make an impact in this company?
3. Why should they hire you?
4. What are your qualifications that are suitable for the position applied?

Third, get your interview marketing kit ready. This is a folder where essential documents are gathered so that when you go out and have your interview, you don’t have to be so jumpy in looking for your documents. In this folder, you will have your resume, certificates, references, and other essential documents. The interviewer might start by having a quick scan of your resume and pose some questions. So make sure to study your resume well. Be familiar with the entries you’ve written because if you sound unsure with the resume-related questions, your employer might think you are lying so answer honestly and clearly.

Lastly, as part of your job interview preparation, groom yourself. Days before your interview, you should have readied what clothes you are going to wear. Remember, even if you sound confident and positive, physical appearance is one of the factors that will be considered. You need to present that you are the whole package they are looking for.

Building your personal brand has become an imperative factor in promoting yourself to hiring managers, employers, and potential clients. One facade of building your trademark is networking and building your connections. Networking should be done online or offline by following appropriate etiquette which can help build upon your reputation and character.

As you worked hard to network online and build your online brand, you should work harder to build it offline. Your personality online should be the same away from the computer screen. Introduce yourself with a firm handshake, perfect your 30-second elevator pitch, and make it creative and memorable. Have business cards handy to pass out to those you network with. When meeting professionals at a networking event try to connect with them online as well so they don’t forget who you are later on.

Dress in suitable attire for the event. If you are not sure what the dress code is for a networking event, over-dress for the occasion. It would be disturbing to have your personal brand take a dive because all they could remember is what you wore to an event.

Networking goes both ways! Know that it is not always about your overall agenda. Provide assistance to your future connection. Stay in contact with your connections. Send e-mails or call them to chat. Sharing articles and information can help build your reputation as a trustworthy professional or as a person your contacts can go to for information. Be truthful in the information you share. Those you are connecting with will know if your intentions are not for real and end up putting a dent in your personal brand.

Remember, what you say and what you do in a room full of professionals or on Facebook can have a lasting effect on your image. How you present yourself to future connections can help or hinder with a future job lead or a new client.

Sending Thank You Letters

When you're not sure how to send a thank you note or who to thank when you're job searching, just think about how you send personal thank you notes to show your appreciation. It's basically the same procedure. People like to be thanked, and that includes the acquaintances who have helped with your job search, as well as hiring managers. A personal thank you note is a great way to remind the interviewer who are. You can send a written thank you note or a thank you email message. Consider timing when deciding which to use. Sending a thank you letter to the person you interviewed with is a good way to reiterate your interest in the job and to remind the interviewer why you are the best applicant. It’s also imperative to take the time to thank everyone who assisted with your job search.

Writing a thank you note after an employment interview can be the solution to getting a job offer. These days of electronic communication has made it appropriate to send thank you letters by email. You can get your thank you letter out instantaneously, rather than have to wait for the postal service to distribute it. If the employer is making a speedy hiring decision, time is of the essence. If there is no sense of urgency, you may still want to send a quick email thank you, along with a traditional letter or note. You'll be restating your interest in the opportunity sooner rather than later.

What Should I Include In My Email Thank You Message?

In addition to thanking the person you talked with, the thank you note highlights the fact that you want the position. Use your letter to attend to any issues and concerns that came up during the interview. You can also view the thank you as a follow-up "sales" letter. In other words, reaffirm why you want the job, what your qualifications are, how you might make momentous contributions, and so on. This letter is also the perfect opportunity to discuss anything of importance that your interviewer neglected to ask or that you neglected to answer as thoroughly or as well as you would have liked. Keep in mind that the thank you note should be succinct and to the point. A couple of brief paragraphs are sufficient.

What Should I Include In Group Thank You Letters?

If you interviewed with a number of people send individual messages to each person you interviewed with. Alter your message to each interviewer so each thank you letter is unique. Ask for a business card at the conclusion of each interview, that way you'll have the contact information for you thank you letters.

Tips For Writing Thank You Letters:

1. Thank Everyone Who Helped You Job Search - It's always important to say thank you after a job interview. It's also important to thank everyone you interviewed with and everyone who assisted with your job search.

2. Don't Wait to Send a Thank You Letter - After you have a job interview, it's important to follow-up right away.

3. Use Your Thank You Letter to Sell Your Candidacy - Consider your thank you letters as follow-up "sales" letters. This is an opportunity to say why you want the job, what your qualifications are, and how you would contribute to the company. Your thank you letter is also the perfect opportunity to discuss anything of importance that your interviewer didn't ask or that you didn't answer as well as you could have.

4. Send a Handwritten Thank You Note - It takes some time to write and send a handwritten thank you note. If you have time, mailing a thank you note to your interviewers will be well worth the effort.

5. Send an Email Thank You Message - Even though handwritten thank you notes make a really good impression, when time is of the essence and the employer is making a quick hiring decision, send an email thank you message immediately, rather than have to wait for the postal service to deliver it.

6. Review Thank You Letter Samples - Review thank you letter samples applicable to a variety of employment-related situations, then take some time to edit and customize the thank you letter you choose, so it reflects your personality and your interest in the new job.

7. Choose a Professional Thank You Card - When you're shopping for thank you cards, don't choose cards that are cute or too funny. The thank you cards you send should be both simple and professional. A plain card that says "thank you" will create a good impression.

Networking to Get a New Job

Career professionals approximate that the immense majority of job openings are never advertised or publicly announced, but filled through word-of-mouth or networking. This is also known as the "hidden job market." The probability of a job opening not being advertised at all increases with the level of the job. Needless to say, most job seekers fail to fully utilize networking to its full potential.

Networking means developing a broad list of contacts which are people you've met through various social and business functions and using them to your advantage when looking for a job. People in your network may be able to give you job leads, offer you advice and information about a particular company or industry, and/or introduce you to others so that you can continue to expand your network.

The best place to start developing your network is with your family, friends, and neighbors and with their family, friends, and neighbors. Talk to co-workers, colleagues in your industry, and those you meet at industry gatherings, such as trade shows and conferences. Talk with former co-workers, bosses, teachers etc.

The key to successful networking is deciding to put in the energy needed to make it work. First, you need to get organized (for example, keeping a business card file or computer database). Second, you need to stay in contact (for example, through regular phone calls or emails). Third, you need to set goals for yourself (such as 5 new contacts per week).

Steps to Successful Networking:

1. Conduct a self-assessment. An honest review of your strengths and weaknesses is vital. You should make some decision relating to the types of jobs you want and the types of companies and industries that interest you.

2. Prepare a strong resume. If you don't already have a resume, now is the time to develop one. You should ideally develop resumes according to what job/s you are interested in.

3. Decide how to organize your network. This step is crucial to your success. If you have ongoing access to a computer, the best method is a spreadsheet where you can enter key information, such as names, titles, company names, addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers, email addresses, and dates of communication. Keeping an organized collection of business cards, where you can write notes and comments about your network, is another alternative.

4. Communicate with your network. It is exceedingly important to stay in touch with your network, which you can easily do by phone, mail, or email. Don't be afraid to ask for their help. Most people like helping others, and you must communicate your current needs with your network in order for them to be able to help you.

5. Initiate informational interviews. One of the best ways to gain more information about an occupation or industry and to build a network of contacts in that field is to talk with people who are currently working in the field. The purpose of the informational interview is to gain information, not to get a job.

6. Follow up with your network. The key is keeping your network informed of your situation and thanking them for their efforts. Never take your network for granted. Sending thank you notes is very important as this shows your network your appreciation.

Communications Class Field Trip

The morning Communications class in West Chester took advantage of an exciting opportunity; we visited the open house at St. Rita School for the Deaf. This visit coincided with our study of verbal communication and dove tailed perfectly into our lesson.

We learned so much about the hearing impaired and other learning and developmentally disabled students. The school has a “complete communication” philosophy. Students learn language and nonverbal skills to help them to become successful. We enjoyed our experience so much that we are still talking about it and drawing from it in class. We hope to expand this in coming quarters to include more students and more classes.

The Office of the Dean of Students serves an important role in student learning and development at Antonelli, advancing the college's mission of teaching culture-current material while providing concentrated, career preparation. In addition, the DoS’ Office often acts as liaison between students, faculty and staff by providing a critical support structure for enriching the overall student experience.

Here are examples of how the Dean’s office helps Antonelli students:

▪ When a high-achieving interior design student was seeking application for a specialized art scholarship, the Dean wrote the letter of recommendation. The student got the award.

▪ When a student was hospitalized and feared getting behind in classes, the Dean worked with the student’s faculty and friends to deliver classroom assignments, worksheets and syllabi directives for their academic success.

The World in Motion

The Photography Department at Antonelli College is excited to announce our expansion into the world of motion. This is an exciting time to be a photographer- with the evolution of creating a moment in time with a still image, to capturing a segment of time with motion. Surviving in the world of professional photography today, you have to be a multifaceted technician who has many skills. With the growth of the Internet and faster connectivity, still-photography is moving into the world of a motion-based medium more and more every day.

Whether you are creating art, telling a story, or just exercising a new means of expression, we all have a natural desire to speak with motion. Worldwide, photographers are embracing video as a new method of telling stories, and expanding those stories to more audiences. Technology is a tool. It’s what you do with it that really matters.
This quarter, May 1st-June 1st, 2010, we are holding the first Video Production I & Video Production II courses. These two classes occur in the second year of the program. All of the rotation classes focus on specific professional industry specializations within photography to give the students the best training and knowledge in preparing them for careers in photography. Video production has been added to our existing rotations of Portraiture I & II, Location Photography, Commercial Design, Nature and Documentary photography.

Linking our Students to Jobs and Business Contacts

According to the United States Department of Labor, 'only about 5 percent of people obtain jobs through the "open" job market - consisting primarily of help-wanted ads on the Internet and in print publications. Another 24 percent obtain jobs through contacting companies directly - the cold-calling method of job-hunting. 23 percent obtain jobs through such means as employment agencies, college career-service offices and executive-search firms. The remaining 48 percent -- nearly half of all job hunters, obtain their jobs through referrals - that is word of mouth.' (quintcareers.com) 85 percent of job openings are never advertised and networking is the tool you can use to get that inside information.

One of the newest ways to network is online. There are some new websites that can help you sharpen your networking skills; Linked-In being one.

LinkedIn.com is a networking tool to help find connections, to recommended job candidates, industry experts, and business partners. It allows registered users to maintain a list of contact details of people they know and trust in business.
